Indoor Engagement Session Locations in Washington, DC
Choosing an indoor location has lots of perks including: avoiding weather such as rain or wind, and easy access to bathrooms. Indoor locations can provide some unique spaces to be photographed in DC!
Here are some tips on getting ready for an indoor location:
- If time is flexible, go as soon as the location opens to avoid crowds.
- Plan a weekday engagement session as weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends
Here is a list of my favorite indoor locations for engagement photos in Washington DC:
National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art is a wonderful place for photography for engagement sessions There are two buildings in addition to the National Gallery of Art. In one building you will find modern art and in the other building there are mostly classical paintings. Although both would be ideal, the building with modern art has more natural light. The LED Tunnel makes for a cool photograph! Open Monday-Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am-6:00pm.
National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery's Kogod Courtyard is located in the center of the building. This location is wonderful as it has a lot of space, natural light and indoor plants. Other parts of the gallery are great for portraits as well. During the holiday season the courtyard is quite festive! Open Daily from 11:30am-7:00pm.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is another great place for photos with its beautiful marble floors and spectacular pillars.
Once inside, you must go through security and then walk up to the main area. The top level is suggested as the best place portraits! Open Monday-Saturday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
Other location Ideas
National Building Museum - The National Building museum has an entrance fee but always has cool exhibits that can make for unique photos.
Union Station - The front of Union Station has a great outdoor area that is covered by the overhang. Inside is also a great spot for indoor photos however Union Station can be busy during peak travel times.

Consider proposing here during sunset for a magical winter surprise proposal in DC at La Vie! The igloos are located on the 12th floor and the restaurant opens at 5pm!
You can make a reservation for La Vie on their website through their reservation tab. I recommend making a resevertion before or near sunset time so you can have some light for photos and before the restaurant gets busy! City Center DC: This location has a large Christmas Tree along with other various lights and decor! City Center DC is surrounded by lots of shopping and restaurants as well! If you are looking for Christmas decor consider this option!
Ice Skating Rinks: Consider planning your surprise proposal around a fun winter activity like ice skating! Washington, DC has a few ice skating rinks including: The National Gallery of Any Sculpture Garden, Washington Harbour Ice Rink, and The Wharf. View the websites for hours and tickets! Christmas Tree outside the Willard Hotel: The Willard Hotel is just a short walk from the White House and the National Mall. It’s Christmas Tree and Wreath outside tend to be less busy compared to the other Christmas Tree’s that draw more tourist like the National Christmas Tree and Capitol Christmas Tree:
National Christmas Tree: The National Christmas Tree is directly in front of the White House and has views of the White House and the Washington Monument right off of the National Mall!
Capitol Christmas Tree: For an iconic view of the US Capitol and it’s Christmas Tree!
A hotel room: stay warm inside and have some privacy by proposing inside your hotel room! This surprise proposal was at the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown in one of their suites!
National Harbor: National Harbor just outside of DC in Maryland has some holiday decor and it’s Ferris wheel that lights up at night! National Harbor is a quick 20 minute drive outside of Washington, DC!

The George Mason Memorial in Washington, DC is located in West Potomac Park along the southern edge of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. specifically at 24 E Basin Drive SW. The site occupies a portion of the historic “Pansy Garden” landscape and is part of the district under the management of the National Park Service as part of the National Mall and Memorial Parks. From the memorial there is a lot of greenery space, the pond, and a view of the Washington Monument! This location is also walking distance to the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. Great Falls Park is an 800-acre National Park area along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, about 15 miles from Washington, D.C. The views from the overlook make for an amazing location for a surprise proposal or engagement photos! From the Virginia side at overlook 3, I photographed this surprise proposal! There are three overlooks that give different views of the falls. Overlook 2 and 3 are more easily accessible; Overlook 1 is more rugged (wet/slippery rocks etc.) but gets you closer. Overlook 3 has the best view but is farthest from parking!
