How to get married at the courthouse in Washington, DC

To get married at the courthouse in Washington D.C., you need to follow these steps:

  1. Obtain a marriage license from the D.C. Superior Court Clerk's office located at 500 Indiana Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

  2. Both partners must appear in person to apply for the license and present valid photo identification and proof of age.

  3. There is a 72-hour waiting period after obtaining the license before the wedding ceremony can take place.

  4. Contact the Superior Court Clerk's office to schedule the ceremony. Civil marriage ceremonies are performed by judges or court-appointed officiants.

  5. The ceremony fee is $45 and must be paid in advance.

  6. After the ceremony, the couple will receive a signed marriage certificate.

It is recommended to check with the Superior Court Clerk's office for any updates on their requirements and procedures as they are subject to change. Don’t forget to hire a photographer!
